Throttle Surging - posted in Spec Miata Garage: When the throttle is moved just past idle and held there, the RPM surges radically, from all most stalling to back to where you are holding the throttle. My idle was so bad it started dieing on its own. - I have gone through the entire idle surge checklist with no luck of a solution. The surge follows what appears to be a dead spot or flat spot in acceleration, almost like the engine is not receiving enough fuel. My diesel engine has developed a problem with "surging" or "loping. Happens when Im going 35mph through town, than when I slowly push into the accelerator when I hit the 55mph zone the car hesitates briefly and the straightens out and goes fine. When driving at 55 or slightly above, flat grade, constant throttle, there is a very faint (almost imperceptible) momentary "lag", then subsequent (equally as faint) surge. Once the engine will idle for 30 seconds to a minute and then throttle up cleanly and without hesitation, the low speed is set.
